RALEIGH, N.C. — Shoppers packed into parking lots and crowded into long lines at  Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh Saturday to take advantage of the last full weekend before Christmas, giving retailers a good reason to be merry this holiday season.

Chicago-based research firm Shoppertrak has upgraded its holiday sales forecast, saying sales will rise almost 4 percent over last year.

A big spending spree Thanksgiving weekend was followed by the typical lull, Shoppertrak said, but sales did not plummet as expected, keeping researchers and retailers optimistic.

Signs advertising sales lined mall corridors, bringing a little cheer to consumers as well.

"I did good – stayed within my budget (and) used coupons to make even better sales deals," said shopper Lequisha Guilford.
