Former Hillsborough Tanning Salon Manager Charged With 77 Counts Of Secret Peeping

Billy Apple, a former Durham police officer, was charged with 77 counts of secretly peeping into a room occupied by a female and seven counts of indecent liberties with a child.

Last month, Hillsborough police raided Apple's business, A Day at the Beach, and confiscated 22 videotapes, machines and hidden cameras that allegedly recorded women undressing in private rooms. Authorities say the people being videotaped ranged in age from 13 years old to over 50 years old.

"The women had come forward and allowed us to take a Polaroid photograph of them and we got information on them," said Detective Gina Chappell, of the Hillsborough Police Department. "We later contacted them and advised them that we found them on the videotapes."

According to search warrants, Apple admitted to installing the hidden cameras at the tanning salon. Authorities say many women have yet to be identified on the tapes, but they said some are willing to testify against Apple.

Authorities say Apple, a former girls softball coach at East Chapel Hill High School, placed coupons for his business in the Orange High School newspaper.

Apple was released Monday on bond. He will appear in court Tuesday.
