The incident happened last month. Following an investigation, police arrested Julia B. Leon on Tuesday.
Leon made her first appearance in court on Wednesday. Chief District Court Judge Joe Buckner set her bond at $100,000 on a charge of felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.
Leon is accused of dipping her son's arms in boiling water and then pouring boiling water on his back because he wouldn't eat.
Police said the child suffered second- and third-degree burns on his hands, arms and back.
The child remained in the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals on Wednesday, 14 days after the alleged incident. He was listed in fair condition.
