FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The war is being fought a world away, but its reality hits close to home.

At Bill Hefner Elementary School in Fayetteville, a large majority of parents are tied to Fort Bragg.

First-graders showed their pride and their patriotism in an assembly at the school Thursday night.

Called "This is America," students waved flags and sang songs as their proud parents captured every moment.

"There are very few families that are associated with this school that aren't touched in some way," said.

Seventy-one percent of the children at this school are affiliated with the military.
