— A Fayetteville woman who was being sexually assaulted late Wednesday wrestled a gun from her attacker and shot him in the leg, police said.

The woman told investigators that she was heading to the Ramsey Food Mart in the 2900 block of Ramsey Street shortly before 11 p.m. when a man approached her in the parking lot and asked for a ride. When she refused, she said, he pulled out a handgun and got into her vehicle.

The man ordered her to drive to the dead end of Brinkley Street, where he raped her at gunpoint, she told police. During the assault, she grabbed for the man's gun, and a struggle ensued.

The gun fired, wounding the man in the leg and the woman in the hand, police said. The woman was then able to run to a nearby house for help. The man fired several shots as she fled, but she wasn't hit.

A description provided by the woman led investigators to arrest Latorie Jerriel Crumpler, 32, in the 300 block of Abbottswood Drive. Crumpler had a gunshot wound to the leg, and police also recovered a handgun.

Crumpler has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He was being held Thursday in the Cumberland County jail under a $100,000 bond.

Berthenia Lindo, who owns a beauty shop on Ramsey Street, said she has never seen any major trouble in the area before, but she is always prepared, just in case.

"I'm always concerned about my safety. I'm always careful, watching and everything," Lindo said.

DON'T BET ON IT. IF YOU SHOULD START CARRYING A LOADED GUN, FIRST GET A PERMIT, GET SOME TRAINING AND LEARN WHEN TO SHOOT AND BE SAFE. HAVING A GUN IN YOUR HAND DON'T NECESSARILY MEAN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SHOOT FIRST. THE PERPETRATOR WILL ALWAYS BE READY. WILL YOU? ARE YOU "THINK" THAT YOU WILL BE READY.

By all means this young lady will not be charge. Why should she be charged? She was raped by a man pointing a loaded gun at her. He even try to shoot her probably trying to kill. Thank God that did not happen.

I AM SO PROUD OF HER OF COURSE SHE SHOULD HAVE AIMED JUST A LITTLE NORTH. THEY BETTER NOT EVEN CONSIDER ARRESTING HER FOR ANYTHING. THE INNOCENT ALWAYS PAY SOME WAY.

Another one bites the dust~ good going Ms. Lindo! Now go buy you some pepper spray. A good blast as soon as he got in the car may have prevented this whole ugly episode....unless you plan on packing heat now, which I totally recommend also! Glad to see a bad guy get a taste of the pain he inflicts. Too bad you didn't hit him in the face LOL

Way to go victim! We need to start showing these perps that they can't just commit a crime against us and not expect any fight. Were I in her situation, I would have fought from the first moment because If i'm going down, I'm either taking you down with me, or ima leave a lot of rock solid evidence that I tried!

Just an aside to all the people advocating the death penalty for rape cases--rape used to be punishable by death in many places (in fact, until fairly recently, several states still had laws to this effect regarding the rape of a child). There was an effort in some quarters to repeal these laws, and it was intended to protect victims. If an individual knows that he's already on the hook for the death penalty for the act of rape alone, he may well decide to go ahead and kill his victim in order to eliminate a witness against him.

Don't get me wrong--rape is one of the most vile, heinous acts one can imagine, but let's give its victims a fighting chance to survive.

"...but if castration was an automatic part of sentencing for these guys, and they knew it, wonder the impact that would make?"

I think that would get most guy's attention and sure would "slow down" repeat offenders. But then that would be inhumane or it would get shot down for some other stupid reason.
