Kids Offer Thoughts On Potential War With Iraq

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Children ask a lot of tough questions, but questions about war are some of the hardest to answer.

Exploris

in downtown Raleigh hosted a workshop Tuesday to help parents talk to their children about war images on TV, but some children had their own opinions about war.

"It's kind of scary when you sort of think about there might be a war," said 9-year-old Maria Fabrizio. "I sort of don't want to have war because it's probably going to hurt a lot of things and not just like one person or one thing or just one house, but it'll hurt a lot of things, and that's not good."

Experts say there are a few things you can do to protect children from seeing too much.

  • Shield younger children from news reports whenever possible.
  • If they do see the news, remind them it's only a picture on TV and that they are safe.
  • Try to avoid repeated reports of the same event. Young children often think what they see on TV is happening in the here and now.
  • Supervise older children's exposure to news reporting.
