Raleigh Police Name Murder Victim, Arrest Husband On Unrelated Charges

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police have identified a woman found dead near Pullen Park earlier in the week. They also have arrested her husband on unrelated charges.

The body of Shirley Lang, a 44-year-old mother of two, of Raleigh was found Wednesday by an investigator who was working another case involving an assault. The body was identified on Friday.

Lang's husband, 51-year-old Daniel Lang, was arrested later Friday on charges stemming from another case. He was charged with one count of assault on an officer, one charge of first-degree rape and one charge of first-degree sex offense against a mentally ill person.

Daniel Lang, who is not a suspect in his wife's murder, is being held on $2 million secured bond. The victim is reportedly a patient at Dorothea Dix Hospital, where both Daniel and Shirley Lang worked.

Police won't say how Shirley Lang died. But they said it was apparent from her injuries that she was murdered.

Friends of Shirley Lang said she was a nursing student at Wake Tech Community College and an intern at Dorothea Dix. Her two children are in their 20's.

Her body was found in a wooded area off Western Boulevard not far from the Dix campus.

Lang's husband reported her missing on Monday.
