Durham Health Officials Put Parents On Alert After Meningitis Case Diagnosed

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham County health officials are asking parents of students at Burton Elementary School to keep a close watch on their children.

A student was sent home from the school Thursday after being diagnosed with

meningococcal Meningitis

.

The bacterial infection causes swelling of the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

The Health Department has treated more than 50 people, teachers and children who came in contact with the student.

Health officials said no one else has been diagnosed.
