Cumberland County Authorities Investigate Apparent Suicide

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office reported that an inmate has apparently committed suicide.

Jeffrey Wayne Holcomb, 33, reportedly hanged himself around midnight Monday. He was discovered hanging in his cell.

Authorities said he was still alive, but with a weak pulse at the time he was found. He was taken to Cape Fear Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to the sheriff's office, Holcomb had been in the Cumberland County jail since Nov. 9. He was being held on $5,000 secured bond on charges of financial card theft/fraud and probation violation.

The sheriff's office said The State Bureau Of Investigation is handling the investigation.
