Cumberland Deputy Escapes Serious Injury After Being Shot At While Serving Warrant

Paul Spiegler and other members of a special response team were trying to serve arrest warrants Saturday on Shawn and Dwight Davis at The Hole, located off Highway 301 near Hope Mills. When they stormed into a mobile home, detectives say Shawn Davis fired a shotgun at Spiegler from about eight feet away.

"If I would have moved a second slower, it could have gotten me in the neck," he said.

Spiegler continued on with the raid, not even realizing that three shotgun pellets had grazed his shoulder and bulletproof vest. They missed his neck by inches.

"We're very fortunate that no one got hurt in the incident," said Lt. Sam Pennica of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. "The shot was very close to one of the officers."

The incident was the latest in a series of illegal activities in a neighborhood known for drug activity and violence, including a murder last November.

The neighborhood has been under a nuisance abatement order since May 2. The order means no drugs or alcohol can be sold there, and no residents can do anything to disturb the peace.

A violation of the order could mean the neighborhood residents could lose their property. Whether the latest allegations of a shooting, drugs and robbery are enough for forfeiture is now up to a judge.

Shawn's mother, Linda Davis, said the county is just trying to force the Davises out.

"They just want this land, and they don't want to pay for it," she said. "And to get it, they want to keep keep bringing stuff up on them to get it."

Dwight Davis has been charged with felony accessory after the fact of robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He also has been charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling and felony conspiracy.

Shawn Davis has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of attempted first degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, two counts of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling and felony conspiracy.

Both Shawn and Dwight Davis made their first court appearances Monday and are currently in jail.
