FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Human remains found last week in a shallow grave in downtown Fayetteville have been positively identified.

Monday, the state medical examiner announced the remains are those of Michael Robert Powers. The 32-year-old was last seen in Fayetteville in August 1995.

Powers' family said he was working in Fayetteville at the time, but he lived with his parents in Lillington.

On Wednesday, Powers' remains were found in a wooded area off Hillsboro Street, across from the Airborne and Special Operations Museum.

The medical examiner could not determine an exact cause of death. For now, the case is being handled as a homicide.

Police say every hour is extremely important when it comes to solving a homicide. Being seven years old, they said this case will have its challenges.
