Posted October 2, 2002

— Wake County residents have an opportunity to arm themselves against the flu.

Wake County Human Services is offering flu shots from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday through November at 10 Sunnybrook Road in Raleigh. Those wanting shots do not need to make an appointment.

Individuals needing pneumonia shots can also get them at the same time as their flu shot. The cost for each shot is $20.

Residents in eastern Wake County can get flu shots at East Wake Human Services Center, 1010 Shepard School Road, Zebulon, on Friday, October 18 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Call 404-3600 to make an appointment.

For those on the run, a drive-thru flu shot clinic will be held on October 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Wake County Human Services Center. Both flu and pneumonia shots will be available.

Unlike last year, vaccine supplies are adequate, but seniors and others with health problems are encouraged to get their shots early.

Health officials say flu and pneumonia account for an average of 20,000 deaths and over 100,000 hospitalizations each year in the United States.
