Benson Volunteer Firefighter Charged With Theft

Posted Updated

BENSON, N.C. — A Benson volunteer firefighter is accused of stealing from a local police officer.

Jerry Ingram was a volunteer firefighter in Benson. He is accused of stealing the wallet of Sgt. John LeQuire of the Benson Police Department three weeks ago.

Police said Ingram was caught on tape trying to withdraw money from LeQuire's account at an ATM. When that failed, they said Ingram used the officer's credit card to purchase pornographic material.

Detective Randy Beasley said Ingram denied the crime before he was shown the pictures.

Benson Fire Chief Will Chandler said Ingram was dependable and spent many hours at the fire station.

"Something like this would disappoint me with any fireman, but especially Jerry, because he was dependable. He really was," Chandler said.

Police said Ingram racked up more than $200 in credit card charges.

Ingram faces a number of charges, including three felony charges and the possibility of never becoming a full-time firefighter.
