Heather Domenie, a teacher who taught first-grade at Fred A. Olds Elementary School, was found dead in her 206 North Becket Street home in Cary last week. At first, investigators thought the death was natural, but an initial autopsy report raises questions that she may have been strangled.
Her fiance, Ian Campbell, told police Domenie had been sick. Authorities said he told them that he went to the store and when he came back a half-hour later, he found her in bed unconscious with her hands clutching both ends of a towel wrapped around the back of her neck.
Authorities said a doctor at WakeMed later found suspicious marks on her neck and fingernail marks on her chest. The state medical examiner's office said it will be a few more days before its official report is out.
Even though state medical examiners are still working on the case, Cary police are allowing Campbell to take the body back to Canada.
Global TV in Canada reports neither Campbell nor Heather Domenie had any previous run-ins with the law. A Canadian newspaper quotes Heather's stepmother as saying, "The only thing we know is that she died last week. We haven't been informed of anything."
Both Domenie's and Campbell's families have released statements, asking the media to leave them alone.
