Man Sentenced To 34 Months In Jail For State Trooper's Death

Travis Freeman was sentenced to 34 months in jail for a car chase that led to the death of Trooper John Duncan. In January 2001, Duncan and Trooper Chris Williams were chasing Freeman when Duncan lost control of his patrol car and hit a tree.

Freeman did not admit guilt in Duncan's death, but did acknowledge the state has enough evidence to convict him.

Kim Duncan, John's widow. had strong words for the man involved in her husband's death.

"This has been a difficult year and a half. I realize that a lot of you don't understand the reasons that I have forgiven you. It is not for you, it is for me," she said.

Williams also had some words for Freeman in court.

"Kim forgives you and maybe one day, God will forgive you, but I can't," Williams said.

In court, Freeman apologized to Duncan's widow, Kim, about the accident.

"I'm sorry for what happened. Like I said once before, I wish I could take it back, but I can't. I just wish you well," Freeman said.

Superior Court Judge Jim Ammons said in court that he thought Freeman was not sincere in his actions.

"I believe that your conduct during this trial shows that you still don't respect the law, and that you still do not appreciate the consequences of what you have done," Ammons said.

The judge also gave Freeman an additional 30-day jail sentence for being late in court. Freeman was supposed to be in court at 9 a.m. Thursday to hear his sentence on an involuntary manslaughter charge, but he did not show up until 10 a.m. By this point, the judge had already issued a warrant for his arrest.

Freeman claims he just got the times mixed up.

Also in court, an unidentified woman who sources told WRAL was an ex-girlfriend of Freeman went to court and started picking a fight with some of Freeman's family members. She was later escorted out of the courtroom.
