Residents 'Garner' Win Over Dog Limits

Posted Updated

GARNER, N.C. — Dog owners in Garner are celebrating a victory.

Pet lovers protested after the town tried to enforce an old ordinance banning more than two dogs in yards less than 20,000 square feet. Residents who break the law faced fines of $100 a day per dog.

Monday night, the Garner Board of Aldermen voted on a compromise. It allows residents to have more than two dogs as long as the additional dogs have proof of obedience training.

Garner officials will only ask for proof if someone else has filed a complaint about the dogs.

Rescue groups are exempt as long as they are certified by a credible organization.
