Authorities Arrest Suspect In Murder Of Fayetteville Teenager

Doan Van Nguyen, 17, of Fayetteville, has been charged with first-degree murder. He is being held in the Cumberland County jail without bond.

Nguyen is accused of shooting Tarandy Demetrius Cutts, 18, shortly before midnight.

Fayetteville police said Cutts and another person were arguing on a basketball court at Christina Smith Park when someone shot him.

Police said Cutts ran off, but later collapsed and died in the parking lot of nearby Walker-Spivey Secondary School. They said Cutts was shot several times in the abdomen, head and neck.

Angela Cutts said she still cannot believe her oldest son is gone.

"He had people who hated him and he had a lot who loved him," she said.

Cutts dropped out of high school in the 10th grade, and had been arrested for stealing and assault with a gun. His family and friends said he was trying to turn his life around.

"He had started to change his attitude and everything. He was trying to be a responsible man," family friend Juanita Moravian-James said.

Police said a motive for the shooting has not been established.
