N.C. Attorney General Puts A Stop To Prerecorded Sales Pitch

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The state's top lawyer is taking on telemarketers and those annoying recorded messages.

The recorded messages are illegal in North Carolina, but that did not stop one company from using that approach to call the main agency enforcing the law -- the state Attorney General's Office.

Barbara Fillion, an administrative assistant in the division of consumer protection, got the message last month.

"I guess they use computer-generated lists and they're fairly indiscriminate, but it is kind of ironic," she said. "Well, they messed up this time. They picked on the wrong people I think."

Thursday, Attorney General Roy Cooper filed a complaint asking for an order to stop the company, fax.com, from calling anyone else with the recording.

The company faces a $100 fine for each call.
