Cary's new Tennis Center, located at 2500 Carpenter Upchurch Road, is already seeing some action on eight of its courts. The other 22 courts are not ready yet, but when they are done, they will more than double the number of public courts in Cary. The $6.3 million center will also offer several amenities.
"We'll have a building with a locker room, showers, a pro shop and some meeting areas too. You can go there and have your racket strung too," said Mary Barry of the Cary Parks and Recreation Department.
Barry says they are hoping to attract some big name tournaments. Not far away from the tennis courts, sparks are flying at the new Sk8-Cary park, located at 2050 NW Maynard Road.
"It's going to be beautiful. It is much greater than I every envisioned the park being, so I'm very excited about it," said Liza Weidle of Sk8 Cary.
Weidle is part of a grassroots organization that raised nearly $40,000 to help get the $750,000 park built. Davis Litzenberger, 12, also helped raise money and has been keeping up with its progress.
"I've been coming pretty often. I've seen it since the beginning, and I've seen it now today and I can't wait until it opens," Litzenberger said.
The park features beginning and advanced ramps on a 12,000-pound slab. There is also a pro shop and viewing area.
"It's looking really neat. It's going to be fun to skate on," Litzenberger said.
The Cary Tennis Center will officially open in July. The Sk8 Cary Park will open its ramps the first part of June. Both will offer many free clinics to kids.
