Sgt. Anthony Kelly of the Fayetteville Police Department said for the past two weeks, somone has called people and businesses throughout the city asking for money on behalf of police. The donations are supposedly for bulletproof vests, a memorial for officers killed in the line of duty and a fund for the children of Officer Roy Turner, who was killed last year.
Kelly said the department is not doing any fund-raising campaigns and it never uses telemarketers to raise money.
"Throughout my career, I've noticed these type of contribution calls, but when something happens [such as] we lose an officer, an officer gets hurt or killed in the line of duty, these type of calls do come out," he said.
Kelly said no one has called him admitting that they gave any money because he said most of the time people are embarrassed that they have been fooled and will not come forward.
With the warning, the Fayetteville police are reminding everyone of the questions you should ask every solicitor.
