RALEIGH, N.C. — After 50 years on Hillsborough Street, a corner-store icon is closing its doors.
Ferguson's Hardware is going out of business. The hardware store just across the street from N.C. State has been a landmark for students and the community.
Owner Taylor Nute said he hates to see it all come to an end.
"We've developed some very wonderful friends. We have great customers," Nute said. "That is going to be the real loss -- the loss personally of the friends I've made and then the loss of service to the community."
Nute said competition from the large home improvement stores, increasing rent and changes in purchase practices from N.C. State have all combined to force him out of business.
