DURHAM, N.C. — Durham animal rescuers are now caring for a female dog and her litter of puppies, which were found under an abandoned house across the street from The Streets At Southpoint.
Leslie Grenick, of Independent Animal Rescue, said that the mother, a mixed breed, had been caring for her seven pups by crossing four lanes of traffic to get food from mall construction workers.
"She comes first thing in the morning and then she comes back again around 11:30 a.m. Then she'll come back again in the afternoon," Grenick said.
The puppies were rescued five days ago. Rescuers were unable to coax the mother into their care until Monday afternoon.
The plan now is to find homes for all of the dogs. Anyone interested should call (919) 403-2221.
