A student at Spring Creek High School who moved to the area last April signed up to play basketball and played on the team. However, according to the
Wayne County school system
, a student must be enrolled in school for 365 days before playing basketball.
"I talked to him, and he is doing fine. He just got caught up in this by no means of his own. He is a good kid," principal Gene Byrd said.
The basketball team is being forced to forfeit 16 basketball wins and a football victory. The basketball team has no chance to go to the playoffs unless it win its conference tournament first.
Rolesville High School is expected to get into the playoffs because Spring Creek is out of the playoffs.
A meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the school system's central office in Goldsboro to discuss the issue. According to state guidelines, a student who wants to play basketball must be enrolled at the school for two semesters.
The student is not playing basketball for the school, but he is still enrolled in the school.
