Demand For Unemployment Benefits Puts Strain On System

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — If you have lost your job, you may be eligible for unemployment benefits, but you can expect a crowd down at the unemployment office.

Job hunters are using computers and reading newspaper help wanted ads to browse the job openings. And while they search, jobless benefits average about $248 a week for 26 weeks.

"Not everyone is qualified, you have to have a number of months into the system and a couple of other things. You have to be a legal alien or citizen of the United States, so those are some of the requirements, but if you are able to file because of no fault of your own, then you are eligible for unemployment insurance benefits," said Andy James of the Employment Security Commission.

The commission that oversees the payment of benefits decided not to reduce jobless benefits regardless of economic conditions. The state is paying out nearly $100 million a month in unemployment claims.
