Gasoline Tanker Overturns In Goldsboro, Closes Eastbound U.S. 70 Bypass

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Eastbound U.S. 70 Bypass is closed in Wayne County west of the Little River because of an overturned gasoline tanker.

The tanker overturned on the ramp into Goldsboro at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police say westbound traffic is not affected, but eastbound traffic is being detoured around the accident scene at S.R. 1243 (Oberry Center). Drivers are being directed to N.C. 581, U.S. 70 Business, and back to U.S. 70. Drivers headed north on U.S. 117 are being re-routed on U.S. 117 Business through Goldsboro.

Police say the driver of the gasoline tanker misjudged the ramp onto 70 east and flipped over. The driver suffered a broken shoulder.

The tanker spilled about 200 gallons of its load. Hazmat crews have contained the spill, and no evacuations of surrounding homes were ordered.

The roadway is expected to be cleared Tuesday afternoon.
