Emergency Funds Unspent Two Years After Hurricane Floyd

print friendly

More than a million dollars donated almost two years ago to help the victims of Hurricane Floyd is still sitting in a government account.

The million is left from the nearly $20 million in contributions then-Governor Hunt solicited for the North Carolina Hurricane Floyd Disaster Relief Fund. It was part of the funds shifted last year to create a government housing program, even though counties in the flood area still needed the money.

As of Thursday, about $350,000 of the nearly million and a half dollars that had been shifted had actually been spent.

James Morrison, president of United Way of North Carolina, says the governor was adamant about distributing the money and he's unhappy that it hasn't gotten out.
