CARY, N.C. — A Cary man ran a special marathon on Sunday in honor of his late son.

Steve Mitchell completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., in honor of Capt. David "Seth" Mitchell.

Mitchell, 30, was one of four Marines killed in October 2009 when two U.S. Marine helicopters – a UH-1 and a AH-1 Cobra – collided in flight over the southern province of Helmand in Afghanistan, military officials said.

Steve Mitchell and six others made up "Team Seth Mitchell" in the marathon. The team raised $7,100 for the TAPS program, which helps families impacted by a death in the military.

The grueling 26.2 miles took the team less than six hours to complete.
