Blind Cat Rescue gets $10K donation from author

A New York Times-bestselling author is making a $10,000 donation to a Robeson County animal rescue devoted solely to blind cats.

SAINT PAULS, N.C. — A New York Times-bestselling author is making a $10,000 donation to a Robeson County animal rescue devoted solely to blind cats.

Gwen Cooper, author of "Homer's Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale," visited the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary facility in St. Paul Saturday morning. She then traveled to Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh, where she presented the check and did a short reading.

Blind Cat Rescue is one of only two shelters in the country that provide a permanent home specifically for blind cats.

"Gwen has become such a strong national advocate for the plight of 'special needs' pets everywhere," shelter director Alana Miller said in a statement. "We've heard from so many people who've chosen to bring a blind cat into their heart and home because of Gwen's book."

"Homer's Odyssey" tells about Cooper's eyeless, three-pound cat who was trapped in an apartment near the World Trade Center after Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and once scared off an intruder who broke into her home.
