A television news trailblazer passed away this week. Oscar Smith, 79, was the first black reporter for WRAL-TV.

Oscar Smith, 79, was the first black reporter for WRAL-TV. He started at the station in March 1972.
After leaving the station, he held positions in state government and was most recently was a columnist for The Carolinian newspaper.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
