DURHAM, N.C. — Dozens of children in need in the Bull City were all smiles Christmas morning, having received bikes and helmets – courtesy of Lewis Days.

Days, aka The Bike Man, 76, spent the morning giving out free bicycles he has collected and refurbished throughout the year. It's been a yearly tradition for him since 2002.

"My heart is full from seeing those kids get bicycles," Days said.

“He's kind of like a granddad to me,” 9-year-old Dashaun Johnson said of Days.

Days has hundreds of bikes at his home, and even the inside is packed with bikes he's working on.

"The economy is so messed up right now that it's kind of hard for us parents to get things for the kids. But luckily, Mr. Lewis for years has been doing this for the kids,” said Darick Moore, whose nephew received a bike.

Days also gave away free helmets to the children who got a bike. The City of Durham helped donate the helmets.

Days' good deed is something he doesn't plan giving up on anytime soon.

"I say every year that I'm not going to do it anymore, but I'm going to keep doing it," he said.
