DURHAM, N.C. — Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "The Phantom of the Opera," directed by Harold Prince, premieres Thursday at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

The musical tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House. He falls madly in love with a young soprano and devotes his time to nurturing her talents, while terrorizing others at the opera house.

It took crews weeks to construct the set, and the famous opera house chandelier was put into place Wednesday. The chandelier is 10 feet high and covered in 35,000 beads.

Tickets are available at the DPAC box office, online at DPACnc.com, by calling 919.680.2787, or at Ticketmaster outlets. Prices range from $25 to $82.

The musical is the winner of seven Tony Awards, and runs at DPAC through Dec. 20.
