CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Town Council has agreed to lease the roof of a downtown parking deck to the Kidzu Children's Museum for a new facility.

The 99-year lease for $1 a year lease for the top level of the Wallace Parking Deck on Rosemary Street will allow the museum to move out of its cramped quarters on Franklin Street. Museum officials said they plan to raise $6 million to $7 million to build a larger facility and expand the number of exhibits.

The Kidzu-Town collaboration will retain a portion of the rooftop as a public park and will provide the Town with access to the outdoor areas for special event, officials said.

The donation of the site for the museum is valued at $4 million.
