ASHEBORO, N.C. — Hundreds of North Carolina families marked Thanksgiving Day in a non-traditional way -- at the zoo!

The zoo, in Asheboro, is closed just one day a year -- Christmas. On Thanksgiving, zookeepers entertain smaller crowds with lessons on the animals who live there year-round.

Attendance at the zoo historically averages 500-700 on Thanksgiving, officials said.

Thursday's ideal weather made the zoo an attractive alternative for to a day on the couch for Lori Wall. She and her family made the trip from Wake County to visit the animals Thursday.
