DURHAM, N.C. — The Department of Homeland Security awarded almost a million dollars to North Carolina Central University's Department of Criminal Justice to develop training for rural first responders.

The $902,000 grant makes NCCU a partner with with the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium (RDPC).

The money will be used to create courses that help rural law enforcement to identify terrorists and other threatening groups and to deal with the stress the job puts on them and their families.

The project provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to gain research experience and interaction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
