Habitat for Humanity builds 16 homes in state

Posted May 31, 2008

— Habitat for Humanity is on a mission to build 16 homes in the next seven days across the state.

Five homes are being constructed in Wake County.

Johnnie Mae White described her new home as a long awaited dream come true.

“I’m a single mom working two jobs, two teenage daughters. So it makes me feel excited. I just thank God for it,” White said Saturday.

Other homes will be built in Chatham, Orange, Durham and Pitt counties.

When I lived in Alpharetta, Ga and worked in downtown Atlanta my company (GMAC) sponsored a Habitat house. If anyone had told me that I would be involved in building a house that someone actually expected to live in....well, no way!! It was the most wonderful experience and I would encourage anyone, even with no building experience, to become involved. The satisfaction you feel is beyond words.

Why waste the time and resources building these new homes when there are so many empty ones sitting on the market?

I am so happy to see good, worthy news reported. I love Habitat for Humanity, and have long been a fan of Jimmy Carter's. Thanks, WRAL, for making room for hopeful news.
