Pets to get blessed at annual Duke service
The public is invited to bring pets of all kinds to Duke Chapel's annual Blessing of the Animals service on Oct. 7.
Posted — UpdatedThe 30-minute service will include performances by the Durham Children's Choir, as well as scripture readings and reflections from Father Michael Martin, director of the Duke Catholic Center and a Franciscan friar.
The service will begin at 3:30 p.m., and individual animal blessings will follow the service. A spokeswoman for Duke Chapel said water and trash cans will be provided for the animals, which should remain under the control of their owners at all times.
Limited parking is available in front of Duke Chapel for those with large animals. Parking is also available in the Bryan Center surface lot, Bryan Center parking deck and behind the Biological Sciences Building on Science Drive.
Ministers at Duke Chapel have blessed a variety of pets at the annual service, which began in 1989. The service is inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, a 13th century Italian Catholic friar who is known for his love of animals.
In the event of rain, the service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.
