DURHAM, N.C. — A former history teacher who was named last year's Durham Public Schools' teacher of the year has been invited to attend the president's State of the Union address this month.

Jeff Nash, a spokesman for the school system, said Friday that Jason Jowers was invited by Rep. G. K. Butterfield, a Democrat representing North Carolina's 1st District in Congress.

The president is scheduled to deliver his speech before a joint session of Congress on Jan. 24.

Jowers received the teacher of the year honor in May for his work at the Southern School of Engineering.

He has since become an administrator at Hillside High School in the Bull City.
