NC State professor in ring for Wake Schools post
Jim Martin, a professor of chemistry at North Carolina State University, announced his candidacy Monday for the District 5 seat on the Wake County Board of Education. He has lived in the county for 17 years.
Posted — UpdatedDr. Anne McLaurin, the wife of Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker, currently holds the seat. She said last week that she would not run for re-election.
McLaurin was elected in 2007 and is one of four Democratic school board members who supported the Wake County Public School System's long-standing student assignment policy of busing students to achieve socio-economic diversity across the district.
Five of the school board's nine seats, including all four Democratic members, are up for grabs in October's election. Of those four, Keith Sutton and Kevin Hill have both said they will run, and Carolyn Morrison has said she will not.
Christine Kushner, who has volunteered with the Wake school system for more than 11 years, most recently as a member of the Board Advisory Council, plans to run for Morrison's District 6 post.
Board Chairman Ron Margiotta, the only Republican up for re-election, has also indicated that he plans to run again.
The filing period for election begins July 25.
