Former Wake schools chief writes book
Former Wake County school Superintendent Del Burns has written a book about how school systems become political battlefields.

Burns resigned from the Wake County Public School System in February 2010 after disagreeing with the policy shifts advocated by a new Republican majority on the school board.
"Preserving the Public in Public Schools," which Burns wrote with consultant Phil Boyle, argues that schools are political and ideological institutions in which each generation battles for supremacy in determining the purposes, goals and direction of public education.
Former State Board of Education member Phil Kirk praised the book in a review on Amazon.com.
"Of all the challenges facing education today, retaining the many meanings of 'public' is crucial to the survival of public schools. This is a must-read for those of us who care about strengthening the 'public' role and understanding of public schools in our nation," Kirk wrote.
Burns is now an education consultant and interim superintendent of Edgecombe County Schools.
