New Bern introduces new police chief

The city of New Bern announced the addition of a new chief of police Tuesday afternoon.

NEW BERN, N.C. — The city of New Bern announced Tuesday afternoon that Toussaint Summers Jr. accepted the position as police chief. He will join the police force in New Bern Oct. 10. 

Summers, who has been in law enforcement for 35 years, has spent the last 12 years as police chief for Herndon, Va. 

"We are excited to welcome Mr. Summers to the city of New Bern," City Manager Mike Epperson said in a statement. "After a thorough process to assess several qualified and talented candidates, Mr. Summers stood out, not only to our management level staff but also to our public and professional panels who spent days evaluating the candidates' skills."

Summers began his career in law enforcement as a police officer with the Prince William County Police Department in Virginia.
