DURHAM, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation wants to hear from the public on a proposal to allow trucks with twin trailers on a portion of N.C. Highway 147 in Durham.

Under state law, twin trailers are currently prohibited on the stretch of the highway between Interstate 540 and T.W. Alexander Drive. The department has determined the road can safely accommodate the vehicles, and doing so would meet a public need.

The department will hold public hearings on the proposal in both Wake and Durham counties if enough citizens are interested. Residents can request the hearing by email at lavery@ncdot.gov, or by mail to Lisa Avery, traffic safety project engineer; 1561 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C., 27699.

The deadline to submit requests is Oct. 19.
