BENSON, N.C. — Neighbors rushed to a home on West Harnett Street after hearing shots fired on June 1. They found Richard Longmire, 39, dead on the front lawn.
Family members, even his own children, could only stand and watch as he lay on the ground, unable to be revived.

The case was all but solved, but two brothers that were priorly arrested were released after charges were dropped.

Patrina Wright was the first on scene; her sister lived at the home where Longmire was killed.

Wright said Longmire and the mother of his children often visited the home to exchange custody of their kids.

“I just went bananas because I saw his body lying there on the ground,” Patrina Wright said.

Authorities said the house was full of people at the time of the shooting.

“Firsthand accounts of making sure all the information is proper is critical, so the police department is doing an exceptional job of doing that,” said Benson Town Manager, Matt Zapp.

If anyone has information about the murder of Longmire, call the NC Wanted hotline at 1-866-2683.
