NC State students worry popular spots may close

Five different businesses are housed in the building that contains the Alley, a popular bowling spot across from North Carolina State University.

One of the store owners told WRAL they are exploring new spaces to lease from, in an event the building is sold. As for their customers, some are excited about the changes, but others are not.

"The character of the street is the small shops," said Carl Meyer, a frequent customer at Reveries Coffee.

Carl and his friend Earnie meet up at the coffee shop every day.

"We really like coming here, we've been doing this for years," Earnie Stitzinger said.

But with the talks that the building is up for sale, the two friends may need somewhere else to go.

"We wouldn't like that. We'd be sad," Stitzinger said.

The building's owners are in discussions on a deal that could bring in a larger retail store that would benefit nearby residents and college students.

"CVS just opened up across the street. The closest Walmart is 15 minutes, and the closest Target is five minutes away," said Jonathan Dean, a students at NC State.

Live It Up Hillsborough, a neighborhood association, says change is necessary for growth.

"Businesses have life cycles, just like people do. They go through phases," Executive Director Jeff Murison said.

Others want to keep the community the way it is. NC State uses the bowling alley for gym classes.

"It's such an important part of being at State," said Thu Le. "A lot of students use it and a lot of students love it. And though it may not be the best alley, it's part of the experience."

As for reports that Target is moving in, a spokesperson for Target said there are no plans for any new stores in Raleigh.
