— NC Quick Pass, which allows drivers to prepay tolls electronically, is now interchangeable with the Florida SunPass.

The state Department of Transportation said Monday that transponders for either state will work as a form of payment on toll roads where either pass is accepted.

Transportation officials said they have tested the equipment to help prevent double-billing.

“This agreement will allow our customers to travel on Florida’s toll roads with the same ease that they enjoy here in North Carolina,” N.C. Turnpike Authority Operations Director John Breedlove said in a statement. “It comes at the perfect time – making summer vacation travel easier and more efficient for motorists in both states.”

In January, NC Quick Pass linked with the widely used E-ZPass system.

"EZ Pass is used all over the country. why not here?" - piloterror1

E-ZPass is used in only 14 states - mainly the northeast and midwest. I'd hardly say that's "all over the country." Florida has its own toll system (SunPass) as do Georgia (Peach Pass), Alabama (Freedom Pass), Texas (TxTAG), California (Fastrack), and several other states.

Umm , it is . NCQuickpass has agrrements with Sunpass and EZpass.
The nice thing about quickpass is that you don't get the dollar a month charge that NJ EZPass charges.

This is the first good idea I've heard from this ridiculous toll road fiasco. I spend a lot of time in Fl including areas near the tolls. Luckily i know my way around to be able to avoid them, but if I spent more time on our toll, then this would make sense for me.

Our company has been charged an incoorect late fee of $25 for an 80 cent bill, and a $6 late fee for a $1.60 fee. We will stay off of the raod at ALL costs. And yes, the $25 fee resulted in our extremely involved attempt to get the turnpike authority to understand WE WEREN'T LATE!!! Very very frustrating.

" If taxes had had to pay for the stretches that are tolls, we wouldn't have them at all."

Ummmmm..... No. Nice try though. Contractors and Private companies don't build roads planned by DOT out of the goodness of their heart.

"Because we didn't pay taxes for the new toll roads, they are built by private corps in return for income from the roads. If taxes had had to pay for the stretches that are tolls, we wouldn't have them at all."

Even if that were true - go look up who FUNDS the private companies so they can do this, hint: taxpayers.

" Why are we paying to drive on roads we've already paid for with the highest gas tax in the Southeast?" -immaannoid

lol . . . just wait. Mr Transportation fix-it himself, Tony Tata, says North Carolina needs more toll highways.

Yes we did. In 1989 the State added 6 cents per gallon additional tax specifically to pay for 540 and two other projects. We were also told that once enough money was collected for these specific projects the tolls would go away. It is now going on 24 years and counting. They have collected MORE than enough, but Easley robbed the highway trust fund and spent the money on who knows what. So now we STILL pay that extra 6 cents and TOLLS exist, and on top of that 540 is still not completed. I am still waiting for the 6 cents extra to be removed.

I will not use ANY roads on which this State places another tax. Anyone being charged a toll should be rebated the equivalent amount against the fuel taxes they are paying.
