Leaders with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety are hoping to recruit candidates for hundreds of job openings on Wednesday.

Hiring is underway for positions that will help keep the state's roadways and correctional facilities safe. One important role that the DPS has been working to fill for months is state troopers.

Officials with the N.C. State Highway Patrol said there are about 190 job openings for troopers. Currently, more than 80 cadets are in training to become troopers, which means more than 100 troopers are still needed.

Other positions involve the criminal justice system and keeping order in correctional facilities as well as responding to severe weather emergencies. That includes correctional officers, law enforcement, juvenile justice, medical professionals, electricians, engineers, probation and parole officers and more.

“There are a number of opportunities within the department,” said DPS Chief Deputy Secretary of Administration Casandra Hoekstra. "So all of these divisions offer rewarding opportunities to serve.”

A recruiting event will be held Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. inside the Kerr Scott Building at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds, located at 1025 Blue Ridge Road.
