DURHAM, N.C. — At a Donald Trump rally on Friday, two protesters from North Carolina gained worldwide attention.

Rose Hamid, a Muslim woman from Charlotte, and Marty Rosenbluth, an attorney from Durham, still have the yellow stars they wore to the rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

“My goal going in was to be as respectful as possible,” said Hamid.

They said they stood in place as the presidential candidate spoke about the current White House and radical Islam. Hamid and Rosenbluth were escorted out and, on way to the door, Hamid said a Trump supporter yelled at her.

“He was in my face, and he was saying ‘Do you have a bomb? Do you have a bomb with you,'” said Hamid. “I kept a smile on my face and I said ‘No, I do not have a bomb. Do you have a bomb?’”

A few steps away, another man jeered and told the pair “We don’t want you here.”

Hamid and other protestors wore yellow stars, which was Rosenbluth’s idea. He said they were meant to send a message.

“I just got fed up with the amount of racism and hate he was trying to stir up,” Rosenbluth said of Trump. “This is what the Nazis did, and we are nervous and afraid the same thing may happen here.”

Hamid said she was there to make a human connection with people at the rally and, in a few cases, she feels she did.

“[A woman] grabbed my hand and said ‘I am sorry this has happened to you,’ and that was a Trump supporter and I want that to get out because I do not want this to be more divisive.”

Attempts to contact the Trump campaign about Friday’s incident were not returned.
