— A motorcyclist died Monday afternoon on Interstate 540 in Wake County after a car came across the median from the westbound lanes and hit the bike head-on, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said that neither alcohol nor speed was a factor when Kanak Singh, 28, of 8004 Neches Lane in Raleigh, swerved into oncoming traffic. They plan to consult with the Wake County District Attorney on possible criminal charges for Singh.

Philip James Sabino, 44, of 10821 Cahill Road in Raleigh died in the collision, and traffic was backed up for miles along I-540 for about three hours.

Drivers were detoured off I-540 as emergency personnel cleared the scene. All travel lanes had reopened by 7:15 p.m.

The cables have also helped save many lives. I for one have had my encounter with the wire cable. If it wouldn't have been for the cables I would have gone into the other lanes.

My prayers go out to the family of the motorcycle driver and the driver of the car and his family. Praying for comfort during this time.

Sorry it sounded like 'short on compassion', but we need ACTION, or this stiff will keep happening. There's been way too many failures of the cable barrier system, and yet DOT is not fixing the problem. We need to demand ACTION to prevent repeats, or else we'll just be 'compassionate' time and time again.

I drove by yesterday, west bound, just after this happened. Not sure what kind of car the man was driving but 3-cable divider that runs through the middle of the medium was still in tack. It looked like it went straight through it.

The angle in which the car went across, was pretty sharp. The motorcyclist had no time to react.

    Prayers to all involved!

Can't answer half your questions except for the one about it needing to take three hours...the man died. You have to call the medical examiner and proper procedures have to be followed when there is a death.

    A possible medical issue.

    Another totally avoidable tragedy.
Why doesn't the 'divided' highway, have a divider..ie a barrier?
How does a half way competent driver, just drive across a wide grassy median?
    Guess that self answered....
Why does it take nearly 3 hrs. to reopen the highway? What can take so long?
Was it a botched suicide attempt?
Clearly our roads are marginal in design, and there's too many drivers who don't take the task of driving seriously. PLEASE wake up, pay attention,

How about having another car swerving into your lane and you reflexively over-react?

My guess would be he fell asleep at the wheel.
