MORRISVILLE, N.C. — A motorcyclist died Monday afternoon on Interstate 540 in Wake County after a car came across the median from the westbound lanes and hit the bike head-on, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said that neither alcohol nor speed was a factor when Kanak Singh, 28, of 8004 Neches Lane in Raleigh, swerved into oncoming traffic. They plan to consult with the Wake County District Attorney on possible criminal charges for Singh.

Philip James Sabino, 44, of 10821 Cahill Road in Raleigh died in the collision, and traffic was backed up for miles along I-540 for about three hours.

Drivers were detoured off I-540 as emergency personnel cleared the scene. All travel lanes had reopened by 7:15 p.m.
