DURHAM, N.C. — A woman charged with killing her 2-year-old son last year has pleaded no contest to a charge of involuntary manslaughter, authorities said.

Alexie Martinez died in May 2006 as a result of "abusive head trauma," according to an autopsy report.

Rosa Benitez-Morales, who is in the country illegally from Mexico, was sentenced to 13 to 16 months in prison in the boy's death. She has already served more than 13 months awaiting trial, so she will be deported rather than spend more time behind bars, authorities said.
