WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Moments after 3-year-old Maleah Banos Ruiz Coats was hit and killed by a car on Old U.S. Highway 1 on Thursday, her mother called for help.

In 911 calls released Monday morning, Maleah's mother, Ivette Ruiz, can be heard screaming and crying while trying to get help.

"I don't remember much of that day," Ruiz said. "The next thing I know I had collapsed and I woke up in the hospital."

The driver of the car that hit the child, and another driver who witnessed the crash, said the child ran out into the road.

"I was coming down Old U.S. Highway 1 going toward Apex and another vehicle was coming the other way. A child ran out in the road and the car hit the child," a 911 caller said.

The caller said the father of the child was upset.

"The lady has hit a little girl in the road. The guy says she's dead and he's carrying her around like a rag doll. He just attacked two or three other people. I don't know what's going on here," the 911 caller said.

Ruiz said she and her husband are responsible parents who watch their children very closely. The family was in the yard together just before the crash.

"Her dad was outside with the other kids," Ruiz said. "They were putting together a toy and she probably got close to the edge of the road."

Ruiz now questions whether or not her daughter ran into the road, but is not questioning how she feels about the loss.

"My child should be burying me. I should not be burying my child," she said.

Authorities said Friday that no charges will be filed in the incident.
