FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — More than a dozen people were displaced by a fire Sunday in Fayetteville.

Fayetteville firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire at an apartment at North Crossing Apartments on Weatherstone Drive. Crews said they could see flames from the third floor when they arrived.

According to a neighbor of the complex, "three or four" teachers lived in the apartment complex with other familes. She said one of the teachers heard a loud explosion that shook the building.

Firefighters did not see the flames at first according to the resident, but then the rooftop ignited.

The fire was under control by noon.

The building was declared a total loss. 15 people and three dogs were removed from the building. One resident said her cat died in the fire

The Red Cross provided assistance for residents and Complex Management provided location units for the displaced residents.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
